When you eat food and drink water, it passes from the mouth into a long muscular tube called the esophagus. The esophagus tightens and relaxes to move food down into the stomach. The stomach mixes the food with digestive juices, churning and mashing the food into smaller and smaller pieces. The digestive juices also act to kill bacteria that might be eaten in food. The partially digested food is then delivered from the stomach to the next part of the digestive system called the small intestine. In the small intestine, water and nutrients are absorbed into the blood vessels. You can now see vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and water from the food being delivered to your cells. Eating the right foods keep yourself healthy.
