Why it's hard to say I love you back

    by Gigliola: Psychology

A tweet from Memesandmkts asks a poignant question: Why is it so difficult to reciprocate the words "I love you"? The post includes a quote that reads, "Love is the most core deepest part of us. If I have to take off my armor and expose that, then you might hurt me. So I stay what I think of as strong." The author then reflects that this armor was never strength; it was fear disguised as strength. The full thread can be found at and the original tweet is at

There were times in my life early on where friends would tell me they love me and I was like, I don't know what to say back. So it's the same thing. It's fear. It's just fear of actually like being open. It's like if you think of a knight, like a knight in shining armor, wearing that armor, it's a safe, secure thing. It's like, okay, ain't nobody getting to me. but saying the words I love you to somebody it's like love is the the most core deepest part of us and if I have to take off my armor and expose the deepest part of me then that means you might hurt me and I don't want to take that risk so I'm just gonna stay what I think of as strong and like I get it like again that's that natural reaction but if you sit with it for a second and just let those fearful feelings kind of run their course, you realize like, wait a minute, how do I feel about this person? Like when I think about them, do I want the best for them? Do I sacrifice for them? Do I care about them? All those things that we would define love as, like the answer would be yes. And so, okay, the only thing that really is keeping me from saying the words I love you is just my own fear and my own pride. And when I frame it that way, I'm like, oh, I ain't letting my own pride robbed this person of knowing what I think about them and how I feel about them.
