Everything in AI just keeps getting crazier. So this is the CEO of Anthropic, the company behind Claude. His name is Dario Amadei. And he was just forced by the US government to remove access to their latest model, Fable 5. This was the official announcement on Anthropic's Twitter account. The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. So Mythos 5 was the model they were supposed to release a few weeks ago, but they gave it to a few people and the feedback they got back was, oh, this is too powerful, too scary. You can't release this to the public. So they didn't, but they talked about how unsafe that it was. And then they went back to work to build Fable 5, which was supposed to be the safe one to roll out to the public. But it was only out for three days before they were forced to make this decision. They continue on to say, the net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Claude models is not affected. We apologize for the disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible. So Alex Finn shared his experience with the model in one of his latest tweets. Fable 5 was the greatest piece of technology I've ever used. I deeply miss it. Solved problems I never thought AI could solve. Finished months of projects in days. It was only live for three days. Had a lovely personality. I now know what freaks crying about GPT being taken away feel like That a former model from ChatGPT that people really liked that when it got removed they were crying about it So his experience he saying it was crazy good Not everyone bought into this being the reality of the situation So here's David Sachs, who personally feels that a lot of this is really just messaging for Anthropic to gain control and leverage over the situation of AI at large. And he literally just tweeted this. I've had a number of conversations with folks inside and outside government about the current situation with Anthropic, and here is what I believe to be true. As we know, Anthropic publicly released its Mythos-class models earlier this week under the commercial name Fable. Fable is Mythos with guardrails, but if those guardrails fail, then you've exposed Mythos and its advanced cyber capabilities to people who shouldn't have them. Keep in mind that Anthropic itself widely promoted the idea that Mythos was a cyber weapon that needed to be regulated as such. They asked for government regulation of Mythos and championed the guardrails on Fable. If there is a vulnerability, big or small, it is Anthropic's responsibility to patch. Ben says that a highly trusted person was testing the model and brought forward an issue to Dario. And Dario refused to fix it, apparently. And they said that they didn't fix it because it wasn't serious. He goes on to say it's a little ironic for them to have this stance when they've strongly positioned themselves as the people most concerned with AI safety, especially when you yourself are referring to the product as a potential cyber weapon. And he's saying that as long as Anthropic were to fix the issue, the ban would be lifted and they could roll it out. And he's saying there's no connection to prior things that have happened between the Department of War and Anthropic because they have had some back and forths.
