Rudacil says she was insulted by the address and questioned why the school would allow Hozik to include such a quote. To give the valedictorian a speech like that and give him a place to say those things and nobody act like they're going to do anything about it or stop it, especially through a public school where it should be run through all sorts of things to make sure that it's okay to say, doesn't feel right to just let go by like that. According to New Hanover County Schools policy, valedictorian and student speeches are monitored by administrators who can edit, review, and pre-approve everything said. Any comments or statements made that leave the pre-approved speech can lead to the microphone being muted or the speech being stopped. For example, a similar policy was enforced in Johnston County last week, when Clayton High School's valedictorian had her speech stopped when she tried to call attention to people suffering in other countries. Hosek's family sent a statement regarding his speech saying, It was a positive outlook on the future of AI, emphasizing the growing opportunity for all of us to make profound societal achievements in the future, that we all have something to offer and contribute, and that everyone has value. After she addressed the crowd, Rue de Seale walked up to Principal Christopher Madden, who told her to keep moving without getting her diploma. But she later received it during a private ceremony.
