Guillermo del Toro has explained that Sally Hawkins was not only his first choice for The Shape of Water but in fact his only choice. The director wrote the part of Elisa expressly for her. He noted that she brought an almost magical and ethereal beauty to the character instead of the more conventional Hollywood appearance.
