The Pope has just died suddenly, and all cardinals are banned from any outside contact until a new pope is elected. But after a full week of voting, no one has managed to secure a majority. Rodrigo has run out of patience. He orders fresh food shipments from outside to keep the cardinals nourished, then sends a secret message to Caesar via carrier pigeon. He tells Cesare to sell off the family's assets and deliver the money to specific cardinals' homes. Cesare then has the families of those bribed cardinals write letters, which are all smuggled into the Vatican inside the custom food deliveries. Thanks to Cesare's scheming, Rodrigo finally wins the majority vote, only for someone to step forward and object right away.
