Keck Hospital USC helicopter crash donor heart
by Niklass: Viral Content
In January 2020, a medical helicopter carrying a donor heart crashed while landing on the rooftop helipad of Keck Hospital at USC. The impact occurred directly above operating rooms and intensive care units, just as staff were preparing for a critical transplant. Since donor hearts remain viable for only a limited time outside the body, urgency was critical. Hospital personnel immediately activated emergency protocols upon realizing a helicopter had crashed above them. Despite the tragic loss of the pilot, first responders managed to retrieve the donor heart from the wreckage and bring it safely inside, allowing the transplant to proceed. The crash caused temporary disruptions as the helipad was closed for structural assessments and federal officials conducted their investigation. In the end, although the pilot did not survive, the donor heart was successfully delivered and used in the life-saving procedure.
