Middle East tensions ahead of U.S. midterms

Whether diplomacy can head off another round of fighting is the question hanging over the Middle East as it braces for potential renewed conflict. Tuesday's U.S. midterm elections could be the turning point, with fears growing that American military strikes on Iran might resume once the vote is done. Thousands of U.S. troops are reportedly moving toward the region, and Iran has warned of severe retaliation. Some diplomatic families are reportedly already leaving. Trump had previously said Washington wouldn't hit Iran before the midterms, which leaves the post-election period open to interpretation. Negotiations are still ongoing with Qatar mediating.
