Mourinho and Drogba at Chelsea

The halftime tunnel at the Vélodrome is where this whole thing actually started. Porto were away to Marseille in the Champions League in 2003, and Didier Drogba had just scored and celebrated like it was the last goal he'd ever get. Mourinho caught him in the corridor and basically admitted the budget couldn't stretch to a bid, then asked whether there was a cousin back in Côte d'Ivoire who played the same way. Drogba's answer was calm and certain: someday you'll be at a club that can sign me. Six months later Mourinho took the Chelsea job, and his first request was the one he kept repeating no matter who pushed back. People around him asked why this guy over anyone else and whether the Premier League would even suit him. The answer never moved. I want Didier Drogba. He turned into a Chelsea legend, and the goals he scored helped deliver titles, but Mourinho has said the memories they built together matter to him more than the silverware. Across two spells at the club, Drogba played 163 matches, found the net 163 times, and collected 14 titles. That manager and that striker make one of the most successful pairings the game has seen.
