    Spain AVE train crash details

at least 64 people are dead after a Renfe AVE high-speed train slammed into a stationary Iryo service in Spain, a disaster Transport Minister Óscar Puente says was triggered by a control center that cleared the way past a red signal. the timeline starts at 8:30 AM near Urda in Toledo when the LZB safety system failed and forced six trains to stop automatically. instead of enforcing line-of-sight rules that limit travel to 40 km/h, the Atocha control center of Adif authorized normal operation for the AVE even though an Iryo was already stopped ahead. Puente reports the train covered roughly 25 kilometers after receiving clearance, hitting speeds up to 200 km/h before the collision at 8:53 AM. Passengers describe long and hard braking right before impact. The minister calls the authorization order inexplicable. With modern automation, this system failure combined with such a decision is inexcusable. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
