Ekonostasi shrines on Greece's roads

The birdhouse assumption is the wrong way in. Those small buildings dotting Greece's highways and its winding mountain routes are Ekonostasi, miniature church shrines, and the reason families raise them is heavier than the look suggests. Most are put there to remember people killed in road crashes on that very ground. Quaint on the outside, a memorial underneath.
