Meta hit with $25 billion New Mexico penalty

A New Mexico jury sided with the idea that Facebook wasn't straight with people about who could get at their personal data, and the price tag on that is $25 BILLION for Meta. The whole thing traces back to Cambridge Analytica, where info from as many as 87 million Facebook users got scooped up without anyone agreeing to it, and that trove later went to work on Trump's 2016 campaign. What's wild is the judge ran the math at over $219 billion first, then cut it down to the $25 billion figure. Where the money lands, at least on paper, is New Mexico's classrooms, with Meta reportedly set to fight it on appeal. For scale, Facebook already wrote a $5 billion check over this same mess back in 2019, and this one comes out five times heavier. Source: NBC News / Writer: Daniyal #MarkZuckerberg
