Spiny Turtle Heosemys spinosa

Those saw-like ridges on a newborn Spiny Turtle's shell are the whole opening act. Heosemys spinosa hatches out already edged in sharp points, and the working theory is that they function as predator deterrent while the animal is small and soft. Then the plot resolves itself: as the turtle matures, the prominent spikes shrink down and the shell smooths out. Native range for the species is Southeast Asia. What gets me is the design logic, a baby built like a tiny dinosaur and then quietly de-escalated over a lifetime. Extraordinary natural design is the only honest read here 🐢
