Yana baby mammoth found in Siberia

What can a creature that vanished before modern civilization ever existed still teach us? Quite a lot, it turns out, when the creature in question is Yana, a baby woolly mammoth pulled from Siberia's permafrost in 2024. Her remains are estimated at roughly 50,000 years old, and the specimen is described as extraordinarily well-preserved. That combination is what gives scientists a rare opening: they can dig into the anatomy and biology of prehistoric mammoths, and get a sense of how these Ice Age giants actually lived. For a world that disappeared tens of thousands of years back, that's a remarkable thing to hold onto.
