Diego Godín on silent leadership

Diego Godín isn't talking about speed or technical tricks defining his career. He says the real work was anticipating danger a second before anyone else could see it. While other defenders sprinted toward the ball, he moved to where he knew it would land. That ability wasn't something you learn in books; it's an innate feeling lived and trained thousands of times without cameras watching. For him, defending is silent leadership. He never had to shout to earn respect from his squad. Stepping onto the pitch meant he provided security for eleven teammates while instilling fear in eleven opponents. He values this defensive contribution way more than scoring goals ever could.
