Lionel Messi on Rosario and National Team

Lionel Messi insists he remains just a regular guy from the neighborhood, grounding his identity firmly in Rosario as the place where he was born. He notes that childhood moments stay exactly as they were, untouched by goals or fame. There is a specific memory of running errands where he would only go if his mom allowed him to bring the soccer ball along. His grandmother Celia pushed hardest for him to start playing on a team. When it comes to gear, he recalls not owning a National Team jersey as a kid; the first one arrived only when he actually joined the National Team and was waiting there for him. People often ask why his Spanish accent didn't stick over time. The answer is straightforward: he refuses to let it stick because he wants to keep full identification with his country. It is the place he intends to return to, even if he does not know when that will happen. If anyone asks where he wants to be, the answer is always Rosario. With his people, he feels happy.
