J.League 2026 penalty rules

The J.League is rewriting the rulebook for 2026 with a format designed to kill draws and boost spectacle. Under this new Meiji Yasuda J1 League plan, matches ending in a tie after 90 minutes go straight to penalties. The point system shifts too: three points for a win in regulation time, two for a shootout victory, and one for the side that loses on spot kicks. This special edition also suspends all promotions and relegations while the Japanese calendar aligns with Europe. It affects everyone from Urawa Red Diamonds and FC Tokyo to Yokohama F Marinos, Mito Hollyhock, Kashima Antlers, Tokyo Verdy, Kashiwa Reysol, Machida Zelvia, Kawasaki Frontale, and JEF United Chiba. Is this the revolution football needed or just madness?
