Lucy Liu Ling Woo and Yu Ling art

The character of Ling Woo on Ally McBeal only exists because of Lucy Liu's audition, and that's the wildest part of her whole story. She went out for a different role on the show, the creators were impressed enough that they built a brand new part just for her, and fame followed. From there came major stardom through films like Charlie's Angels and Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill. Her roots are in Queens, New York, where she was raised by Chinese immigrant parents and Mandarin was the language spoken at home. English didn't come until she was five years old. Acting and directing aren't the only things on her resume either, since she also makes visual art, paintings and sculptures included, and that work has shown internationally under the name Yu Ling. Actress, director, artist, and the list still holds up.
