Chelsea Haley adopts Jerome and Jace

What does it take to keep a kid from slipping all the way through the cracks? For Chelsea Haley, the answer wasn't a lesson plan. She was 22 and teaching in Louisiana when Jerome Robinson landed in her orbit, a student who kept getting suspended. So she showed up where it counted, at his football games, and helped out with groceries, and let the trust build slow instead of forcing it. By 2015, Jerome wanted to come live with her. That one ask turned into something bigger than either of them probably saw coming. She took in Jerome, and Jace, his younger brother, and made it official through adoption. At 24, she was raising two boys on her own. Which meant extra shifts and extra jobs to keep the lights on and food on the table. And Jerome? The kid who used to spend his days out of class came back and put in the work, climbing all the way to honor roll. That's the part that gets me. A future doesn't always get saved by some grand gesture. Sometimes it's just one adult who won't quit on a kid, staying in the picture long enough to become family. Teacher first. Mother after.
