    The Crying Game 1992 review

    What The Crying Game actually asks is whether love holds up once your expectations get tested, and Neil Jordan built the whole thing around that question instead of around the shock. That's why it still lands: love and identity get treated with real tenderness here, not like a party trick. 1990s crowds were too busy losing their minds over the reveal to clock that Dil was the best person in the entire movie. Fergus sat with the truth for a few days before he settled on the right call, and that slow reckoning is the most human beat in the film. As a thriller it's criminally underrated too. The tension running through the IRA subplot alone outpaces most modern action movies, and the way political suspense folds into tender romance never once feels stitched together. Boy George on the title track. Jaye Davidson's presence doing so much heavy lifting. The Crying Game is a landmark for queer and transgender cinema, and it got there long before the rest of the industry caught up. Synopsis: an IRA soldier kidnaps a British troop, the troop dies, guilt sends him to check on the man's girlfriend, he falls hard for her, and then everything gets wildly complicated. Pure 90s cinema magic. 4/5
