The system doesn't just fail to resolve the conflict; it actively prevents resolution by refusing to look further. In the Name of the Father isn't really about courtroom battles. It's a father-son story that happens to indict a state. Daniel Day-Lewis portrays a character consumed by rage, but the real weight falls on Pete Postlethwaite as Giuseppe Conlon. His performance is quiet yet dominant, proving that the man barely raising his voice is the one the story can't survive without. Gerry's father traveled all the way to England with the intention of clearing his son's name, only to end up imprisoned instead. The film depicts the long process of overturning that conviction, showing how the father took the fall so the son could eventually be free. Released in 1993, this narrative criticizes state actions by showing how easy it is for the powerful to bury the truth. It still feels unreal that these events required a movie to gain public attention before people started flinching.
