Sheep milk production by country 2024

So the 2024 sheep milk board, per FAOSTAT numbers crunched by Terra Cultiva, is a real thing to scroll through. China sits way out front at 1,256,430 tonnes, with Greece next at 945,820 and Türkiye right behind at 906,945. Those three alone make up roughly 31.9% of the reported global total, which honestly tracks once you see the drop off after them. Syria holds fourth at 714,642 tonnes, Algeria fifth at 542,280, Spain sixth at 540,950, Italy seventh at 476,020, Romania eighth at 434,400, Sudan ninth at 410,963, Iran tenth at 392,112, France eleventh at 337,060, Somalia twelfth at 309,107, Mali thirteenth at 215,522, Afghanistan fourteenth at 194,000, Niger fifteenth at 182,600, Indonesia sixteenth at 147,600, South Sudan seventeenth at 134,900, Jordan eighteenth at 109,200, Kenya nineteenth at 99,100 and Saudi Arabia closing it out at twentieth with 83,600 tonnes. Worth knowing this is raw sheep milk in tonnes, not a headcount of sheep, and the FAOSTAT figures can mix official, estimated, imputed or provisional observations. Also sheep milk isn't really a cow or buffalo situation, it's tied hard to cheese and other high value dairy stuff. For a lot of Asia, the Mediterranean and parts of Africa it's a core livestock resource for food, rural income and dairy processing. Reported global total lands around 9.75 million tonnes across 83 countries with 2024 observations, China's slice of that about 12.9%.
