    ⭐Tom Hanks⭐Paul Greengrass🎪Oscars

    Captain Phillips Tom Hanks

The real horror in Captain Phillips isn't ghosts or demons. It's four men in an orange lifeboat, AK-47s in hand, nowhere to run. That's the whole nightmare, and it's psychological claustrophobia that tightens every time I rewatch. What gets me is how Paul Greengrass handles the Somali pirates. They come across as desperate people with weapons, not cartoon villains. You grasp why they ended up on those skiffs, and at no point does the film excuse what they did. That balance is why it holds up so well on repeat viewings. Muse isn't the actual bad guy here. The shipping company is, for sending a barely defended cargo ship straight through pirate waters and then acting surprised when the bill showed up in AK-47s. Barkhad Abdi, in his first role ever, made $65,000, held his own against two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks, dropped a line that's still quoted in pop culture, and landed an Academy Award nomination. That's efficiency. The Navy SEAL sniper sequence near the end is a masterclass in pacing. Three target locks, synchronized wave bobbing, and then silence until the simultaneous shots. My pulse spikes every single time. Set in 2009, Somali pirates hijack the Maersk Alabama and take Captain Richard Phillips hostage in a lifeboat. While U.S. Navy forces close in, Phillips survives by staying useful as negotiations fall apart. Navy SEAL snipers kill his captors and free him, and the movie ends with him in shock, finally safe. 4.5/5 stars.
