William Murphy returns $7.65 million lottery ticket

In 1986, William Murphy was living on welfare in Montreal when he stumbled across a wallet on the street. Inside were multiple lottery tickets that he mailed back to the owner after keeping them briefly just to check their value. One of those tickets turned out to be worth C$7.65 million, which was about US$5.5 million at the time. It is reported that Murphy had only 56 cents in his pocket when he found it. He actually thought about keeping the winning ticket for roughly two hours before deciding against it. Murphy came to the conclusion that he was not legally or morally entitled to that money despite his financial situation. Eventually he located the original owner and gave the ticket back. The Los Angeles Times notes this story because Murphy could have easily kept the millions. He Had Almost Nothing. He Returned a Winning Ticket Anyway. An unforgettable story of honesty when most people would have kept the money.
