Didier Deschamps on Lionel Messi

Didier Deschamps admits that after years of facing Lionel Messi, he still finds himself crafting special plans just to try and stop him. It isn't just about the player; it is a phenomenon that defies all standard notions of football. Whenever Argentina shows up, the French coach knows that 90 minutes will simply not be enough to contain the Argentine star. You can close every single space, mark him with three defenders, keep your eyes locked on him at all times, yet in a single moment, his decision changes everything. What really sets Messi apart is that he does not need extra space or time to make a difference. He possesses that rare talent allowing him to predict the play before it even happens. Sometimes you feel like he reads defenders' thoughts before they have even formed them. Is he the best player in the world? For Didier Deschamps, the answer is yes. It is not only because of his skills but also his influence beyond the field. Even when he does not touch the ball, he influences our decisions, our plans, and our entire way of playing. In the 2018 World Cup, they faced him and it was a real battle. The 2022 matchup proved to be an even greater challenge. Messi pushes coaches to rethink everything they know about football. When he retires, Deschamps predicts he will feel something missing from the world of coaching because facing him was a true test for every manager. Despite all preparations and plans, Messi remains unpredictable. At the end of the day, all you can say is thank you for living in his time.
