Shopify Canvas AI store builder

The question worth sitting with isn't whether Shopify shipping Canvas is a nice builder. It's whether this is really a play to own how stores get made, and the clue is buried in what the feature actually does. Chat isn't the story. Sidekick editing and rendering live store code is, plus screenshots that keep the merchant's view in sync with what's happening under the hood. If that holds, theme work turns into a conversation, and every bit of that creation, and the value attached to it, stays on Shopify's own rails. Desktop only, third-party themes excluded. Easy to read as half-finished. Also easy to read as a controlled first step: prove the loop where quality is easiest to guard, then widen it out. Trust is where it gets shaky. Speed will feel great right up until an AI tweak quietly takes out something conversion-critical, and at that point debugging vibes is not a workflow.
