Wyoming women's suffrage 1889

Wyoming didn't just ask nicely. In 1869, the territory handed women the vote, long before most of the country was even discussing it. Then on September 30, 1889, delegates in the state's constitutional convention went further, approving a document that secured women's right to cast ballots and to run for office. When Wyoming pushed for statehood, that provision turned into a fight in Congress. There were real worries it could sink the whole admission bid. But the state wouldn't drop it. Wyoming held its ground, joined the Union as the 44th state in 1890, and kept women's voting rights intact. That was three decades before the 19th Amendment extended suffrage nationwide. History sometimes starts in places nobody's watching, not the centers of power.
