Why humpback whales breach

No one can say for sure why humpback whales launch themselves clear of the water, but the show itself is called breaching. Pushing tens of thousands of pounds of body up and out costs a huge amount of energy, so there has to be a reason. One idea is that it works as a message system, since the crash back into the sea sends sound through the water that other whales can pick up. Another is that breaching is nothing more than play. Scientists have looked at it and still don't have a single answer that covers every case.
