Kakao shuts down Tapas

Tapas was pulling in close to $40M a year and was profitable when Kakao bought it back in 2021, which makes the shutdown news land differently than your usual platform closure. Founder Chang Kim says the service isn't vanishing outright, it's being folded into KakaoPage, Kakao's Korean platform. Whether your account data or the credits sitting in the app make the jump with you is still an open question though. What he's really not happy about is the rollout. Kakao never gave users or creators a heads up before business media ran with the story, and Kim called that out directly. All of this is why digital ownership keeps coming back around.
