🎬📺The Thin Red Line (1998)🔥4/5⭐ Everyone claims Saving Private Ryan is the definitive WWII movie, but history proved The Thin Red Line right. Spielberg gave us heroism and spectacle; Terrence Malick gave us existential dread and gorgeous, indifferent nature. While Ryan influenced video games, Malick made poetry about how war destroys the human soul. One aged like a blockbuster, the other aged like fine art. The Thin Red Line is not a war movie. It’s a nature documentary that happens to have Nick Nolte screaming Homer in Greek while men die for a hill. The Japanese are barely characters. The Americans are barely characters. The real protagonist is the light hitting a leaf. That’s why half the audience walked out and the other half never recovered. Adrien Brody trained like hell, shot a lead role, then Malick edited him into a guy who occasionally exists in the background looking sad. That’s not a director. That’s a man who looked at an all-star cast and said “what if the trees were the A-listers?” George Clooney shows up for one scene like he took a wrong turn on the way to a better movie. ⭐Synopsis: Private Witt goes AWOL to live with Melanesians like he’s found Eden. The army drags him back to Guadalcanal. He spends the rest of the movie looking at death the way other men look at maps. At the end he dies the way he lived: as if he’d already seen the other side and was just waiting for the rest of us to catch up. That’s the whole movie. That’s the whole argument. #StevenSpielberg #NickNolte
