🇷🇴 I’ve been following what happened to Călin Georgescu since Romania cancelled the election he nearly won, and his story has taken a remarkable turn! 2 years ago, he came first in the opening round of a presidential election. Today, a Romanian court ordered him into pre-trial detention for 30 days. The strange thing is that the case putting him behind bars now isn’t actually the case that made him famous. Prosecutors allege Georgescu and two others persuaded a businessman to hand over €1.1 million for financing that never materialized. He denies wrongdoing. Meanwhile, he is already facing two separate prosecutions connected to alleged national-security offenses and the promotion of Romania’s fascist-era figures. So the political story that began with Romania cancelling an election has become something much bigger. Georgescu didn’t become president.
