What started as a quick stop on a Memphis street ended with Jabril Walls being called a little girl's unofficial godmother. She was on her way to her grandmother's place in Frayser, her own kids already dropped off at school, when she spotted a three-year-old standing by herself in traffic. Walls didn't keep driving. She parked so her car shielded the lane, then stretched out her arms, and the toddler walked right over and asked where her parents were. Walls and her grandmother pieced together the clues the girl gave them, things like a house painted gray and white and a pair of shoes left on the ground. The home didn't turn up right away, so the child was brought to a fire station and officers were called. Before that day was over, she was reunited with her family. Walls described the whole thing as an innocent accident, not neglect. And the connection didn't stop there. She stayed in touch with the family, came to the girl's birthday party, and picked up the title of unofficial godmother along the way. "It takes a village," Walls said.
