Snatchers 2019 review

What if your first time came with a facehugger and a second trimester the next morning? That is the exact pitch for Snatchers, released back in 2019. It plays out like a spiritual successor to Mean Girls where Cady Heron somehow ends up pregnant by an alien parasite instead of just dealing with social climbing. Mary Nepi's comedic performance is central to making this work, yet the film still didn't get the mainstream noise it deserved. The story follows Skyler who goes to Mexico, breaks a Mayan doll, and then has to deal with space creatures that act like horny parasites. It feels like cinema's most expensive PSA about how you should've used a condom. The practical effects on display here are way better than some of the CGI we are stuck with in 2024. While the aliens provide the hook, the real narrative focus lands on female friendship and the messy dynamics between high school girls rather than just the monsters. Hayley returns to support the protagonist even after they were estranged, which makes her showing up anyway feel like the most romantic thing in the whole movie. A girl trying to reconcile with her boyfriend while facing pregnancy-like symptoms leads to a clinic scene described as unholy and a party scene that is even worse. By the end, the high school characters are saving Arizona from these parasites. The combination of messy, mean, and sincere tones is something rare to find, making this one of the better movies about female friendship and social climbing in the last decade. #Movies
