Back to the Future original Marty McFly Eric Stoltz

Michael J. Fox was the first choice for Marty McFly all along, but Family Ties kept him locked up, so Eric Stoltz stepped in and shot for roughly six weeks in late 1984. Robert Zemeckis, Bob Gale, and Steven Spielberg eventually pulled the plug and recast. It was never about Stoltz lacking dramatic chops, because he clearly has them. The tone he brought just landed way too heavy and way too serious for what this movie needed, which was pure screwball energy and sharp comic timing. Once Fox freed up, Stoltz was out on January 10, 1985, and most of his scenes got reshot with Fox. Fox turned Marty into something iconic. Stoltz was just never the right match for this specific film
