Largest Beekeeping Countries 2024

Beekeeping isn't just about the honey, beeswax and other hive products coming out of the hives. It's a link between livestock resources, food production, biodiversity and rural incomes that keeps things moving. Bees provide critical pollination services for crops and wild plants too, which is huge for agricultural economies. The global picture for 2024 shows roughly 83.92 million beehives spread across 98 countries with available observations. India held the top position in 2024 with 12.65 million beehives, accounting for about 15.1% of the calculated total from available national observations. China ranked second with 9.36 million beehives right behind them. Türkiye ranked third with 8.96 million beehives. Iran ranked fourth with 7.26 million beehives. Ethiopia ranked fifth with 6.71 million beehives. Tanzania ranked sixth with 3.12 million beehives. Argentina ranked seventh with 2.99 million beehives. Russia ranked eighth with 2.67 million beehives. The United States ranked ninth with 2.60 million beehives. Mexico ranked tenth with 2.14 million beehives. South Korea ranked eleventh with 2.13 million beehives. Kenya ranked twelfth with 1.87 million beehives. Central African Republic ranked thirteenth with 1.67 million beehives. Angola ranked fourteenth with 1.20 million beehives. Serbia ranked fifteenth with 1.17 million beehives. Brazil ranked sixteenth with 1.04 million beehives. Germany ranked seventeenth with 1.01 million beehives. Canada comes in at number eighteen with 745,900 beehives. Uzbekistan ranked nineteenth with 742,500 beehives. Egypt ranked twentieth with 714,900 beehives. Africa has several countries among the world's largest beekeeping populations with Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Central African Republic and Angola all making the cut. For smallholder farmers, beekeeping can provide an additional source of income without requiring large areas of land or large quantities of animal feed. Rwanda recorded approximately 4,200 beehives in 2024 according to FAOSTAT. FAO has also highlighted beekeeping and honey production as an important agricultural opportunity in Rwanda. These figures represent BEEHIVES, not the number of individual bees. The 2024 global figure is the sum of available national observations.
