Goat meat serves as a significant protein source and income generator within developing agricultural systems, where these animals are valued in dryland and smallholder farming for their adaptability to diverse environments and feed resources. They require relatively limited space compared to conventional livestock and can utilize shrubs, browse, and other vegetation that may not be suitable for many conventional livestock systems. The goat value chain creates economic activity through various stages including breeding, feeding, animal markets, slaughter, meat processing, transport, and retail. Africa has a major presence in the global goat-meat industry, with East Africa strongly represented in the ranking. In 2024, China produced approximately 2.54 million tonnes of goat meat, ranking first globally. India produced approximately 1.72 million tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking second globally. Pakistan produced approximately 561,100 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking third globally. Nigeria produced approximately 292,400 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking fourth globally. Bangladesh produced approximately 243,800 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking fifth globally. Chad produced approximately 165,700 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking sixth globally. Ethiopia produced approximately 149,300 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking seventh globally. Tanzania produced approximately 127,100 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking eighth globally. Sudan produced approximately 113,500 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking ninth globally. Türkiye produced approximately 99,500 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking tenth globally. Kenya produced approximately 97,400 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking eleventh globally. Yemen produced approximately 89,600 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking twelfth globally. Nepal produced approximately 86,300 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking thirteenth globally. Malawi produced approximately 77,600 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking fourteenth globally. Indonesia produced approximately 70,500 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking fifteenth globally. Mongolia produced approximately 63,800 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking sixteenth globally. United Arab Emirates produced approximately 59,800 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking seventeenth globally. Australia produced approximately 54,400 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking eighteenth globally. Saudi Arabia produced approximately 50,900 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking nineteenth globally. Afghanistan produced approximately 47,600 tonnes of goat meat in 2024, ranking twentieth globally.
