People keep treating modern military thrillers like they are superhero origin stories, but Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down refuses that game. It is a brutal lesson on how hubris fails when a supposed 30-minute mission drags into chaotic urban warfare in Mogadishu. The cinematography here still outclasses ninety percent of the CGI-heavy action films flooding screens today. You can watch this over two decades after release and it remains grounded and terrifyingly raw without needing to soften the edges. It is wild to realize that half the cast went on to become massive franchise leads while they were getting pinned down in Somalia back then. Tom Hardy, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, Nikolai Coster-Waldau, and Ewan McGregor were all fighting for their lives in 2001 before the MCU, Westeros, or Middle-earth existed.
