The Devil's Advocate 1997

The Devil's Advocate dropped in 1997 and it stands alone as the only courtroom movie where the real trial isn't about guilt or innocence but whether you'll sell your soul just to get a corner office. Al Pacino delivers a monologue that hits harder than any closing argument ever written, with his final speech still ranking as the greatest 'I am the boss' moment in cinema history while everything released after 1997 feels like fan fiction by comparison. Keanu Reeves plays a character who spends two hours looking like he's trying to remember if he left the oven on, delivering lines like vanity is my favorite sin with pure cinematic intensity while Al Pacino essentially cosplays Satan with a tan and a custom suit. Charlize Theron acts in the film and IMO she outacted both Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves because her slow descent into isolation and horror carried the entire emotional weight of the movie in a legendary performance that doesn't get talked about enough. The plot follows a young lawyer moving to New York City after winning cases based on vanity, getting a dream penthouse, and then discovering his firm's senior partner is his biological father who also happens to be Lucifer. The movie presents ambition in an attractive manner so effectively that the real villain isn't John Milton but how the film makes greed look so damn sexy that half the audience walks out wanting the job offer. Al Pacino plays the role of Satan, John Milton, and the devil didn't need to tempt us because we showed up already packing our bags.
