Largest Graphite-Producing Countries 2023

World Mining Data 2025 put out the 2023 numbers for graphite mine production in metric tonnes, and the list runs 18 countries deep. Before the ranking though, what graphite even is: a strategic mineral, and the stuff shows up in battery anodes for lithium-ion setups, in steelmaking, in refractories, in lubricants, and in plenty of advanced industrial work besides. China sits at 1,208,000 tonnes. India is next at 128,947 tonnes. Mozambique comes in at 97,346 tonnes, then Madagascar with 60,720 tonnes. Brazil produced 56,053 tonnes. Türkiye is at 27,974 tonnes. North Korea reported 20,000 tonnes. Russia comes in at 14,500 tonnes. Tanzania produced 13,475 tonnes. South Korea is at 9,615 tonnes, Norway at 6,483 tonnes. Canada reported 4,261 tonnes. Mexico produced 3,124 tonnes. Sri Lanka comes in at 2,998 tonnes. Ukraine is at 1,666 tonnes, Vietnam at 1,100 tonnes. Austria produced 300 tonnes. Germany closes it out with 136 tonnes. The reported global total for the year was 1,656,698 tonnes. China alone was 72.92% of that, and the top five together made up 93.62%. WMD lists 18 producing countries, so there's no invented top 20 here.
