Fourteen countries reported lithium mine production in 2023, and World Mining Data 2025 has the receipts measured in metric tonnes of Li₂O content. Australia sits way out front at 204,200 tonnes, which works out to 40.84% of everything recorded. Chile takes second with 113,200 tonnes. China isn't far behind at 106,300 tonnes. Stack those three together and you get 84.75% of the global total. Zimbabwe comes in at 33,900 tonnes, then Argentina at 18,610 tonnes. Brazil logged 15,193 tonnes. Canada pulled 5,436 tonnes. The United States produced 1,325 tonnes, Nigeria 930 tonnes. Bolivia and Portugal are tied at 380 tonnes each. Tanzania managed 57 tonnes, Russia 30 tonnes, and Burundi rounds out the list at 13 tonnes. Add it all up and the world hit 499,954 tonnes of Li₂O in 2023, which is the kind of number that makes you realize how lopsided this whole thing is. Lithium itself keeps showing up in batteries, EVs, energy storage, and basically every gadget you own, so these rankings matter more than they look.
