Colombia cuts diplomatic ties with Iran

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Colombia has officially announced that diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran are severed, a move that became effective on September 19, 2026. This sovereign decision responds to the pillars guiding the Government's foreign policy regarding national and hemispheric security, and the fight against transnational crime, taking into account alleged links between the Iranian government and international terrorist groups and other narcoterrorist groups that threaten the country's security. The Colombian government also took into account documented human rights violations committed by the Iranian government on its territory, verified attacks against countries that are not part of the conflict in the Middle East, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, and the obstruction of the authorities' efforts to allow the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to verify the scope of its nuclear program. The aforementioned actions have deteriorated Colombia's trust in the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The measure directed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran clarifies that the above does not mean the severance of consular relations, in accordance with Article 45 of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and paragraph 3 of Article 2 of the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. Therefore, the Directorate of Protocol will inform the Iranian authorities of the procedure to be followed. The defense of national sovereignty constitutes an indispensable pillar of Colombian foreign policy. In this context, Colombian diplomacy will protect the country's borders, reject any form of external interference, and promote the defense of its citizens and Colombia's interests before the international community.
