Lawrence Tanter Lakers announcer dies at 76

The voice that filled the Lakers' building for 43 seasons has gone quiet. Lawrence Tanter has died at 76, and the Los Angeles Lakers are left without the man who was, for 1982 through 2026, the soundtrack to everything that happened on that floor. His job was introductions, but what he actually did was give the franchise a sound. Players came and went, eras turned over, and through all of it Tanter was the thread. Ten championships and 16 Western Conference titles unfolded while he was on the microphone. He called those teams onto the floor, and generations of fans learned what a Lakers home game sounded like through his delivery. He stepped away from PA duties in June, after a stroke hit him late in the regular season. The last six home games and the playoffs went on without him behind the mic. A month before his death, he sent a text to Dave McMenamin of ESPN. "Quote me. It's been a blessing." That was how he described his own tenure. Rest in peace, LT.
