Carl Friedrich Gauss World of Science

The unit for magnetic flux density got its name from a person, not a lab. That person is Carl Friedrich Gauss, a German who worked as a mathematician, astronomer, and physicist. Peer mathematicians eventually settled on calling him Princeps Mathematicorum, the Prince of Mathematicians, and the breadth of what he touched helps explain why. At three years old he caught a mistake in the records his father kept for wages. By around seven he had worked out the total of every number from one through one hundred without writing them all down. His 1801 Disquisitiones Arithmeticae gave modern number theory the groundwork it still builds on, along with ideas the field never dropped. Physics, astronomy, and geodesy each pulled real contributions out of him, and the normal distribution rests partly on concepts he developed. With Wilhelm Weber he helped put together a working electromagnetic telegraph at a point when very few existed. The naming spreads across fields: Gauss's Law in electromagnetism, Gaussian curvature, Gaussian elimination, and plenty more.
