Basic Instinct Michael Douglas Sharon Stone

Hollywood has spent thirty years trying to replicate the impact of a single scene in Basic Instinct without success. Everything made since feels like derivative fan fiction compared to what happened when Michael Douglas portrayed a detective who suspects his partner might murder him with an ice pick yet continues the relationship anyway. The author calls this iconic bad decision-making because the plot involves a detective falling in love with a prime suspect in an ice-pick murder case where the suspect writes novels detailing the crimes she is accused of committing. Sharon Stone plays the character Catherine Tramell and her performance is described as definitive for 90s cinema femme fatales. A single glance and uncrossed leg by the character caused other fictional femme fatales to be overshadowed forever. The film's ending remains a subject of debate among audiences while the narrative contains dangerous sexual content and a truth worse than the danger. Basic Instinct is credited with creating the erotic thriller genre but it is also described as having weaponized that genre entirely.
