µBites cookies made from plastic waste

Here's the question this raises: could the same setup that feeds astronauts also feed people after a disaster? NASA's Deep Space Food Challenge backed the research, and the team behind it sits at Southern Illinois University, where yeast got engineered to break down waste into something you can actually eat. PET plastic and leftover plant material go in, and the modified microbes turn them into fats, vitamins, flavoring compounds, and protein. From that, researchers 3D-printed µBites, protein-heavy cookies. 📷: SIU Carbondale. Source: American Chemical Society (ACS).
