Lesser Yellownape woodpecker

You'll find the Lesser Yellownape (Picus chlorolophus) across a huge stretch of tropical and sub-tropical Asia, where it breeds widely and is frequently common. From the Indian subcontinent into Southeast Asia, the map runs through India, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, then east to Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. At roughly 27 cm, it's on the larger side for a woodpecker, built in the classic woodpecker mold. Green covers the upperparts, broken only by that vivid yellow tufted nape. Green also runs down the neck and breast, while the belly goes whitish with fine green barring, and the rump and tail sit blackish. Males and females diverge in the details. An adult male carries a green head and white throat, with red above the eye, red above the nape, and red moustachial stripes. A female keeps it simpler: a red patch above the ear coverts is her only red. Young birds look like the female but duller. And if you're in peninsular India, the subspecies there has a greyer head. 📸
