Mayor Mamdani of Uganda just announced a lawsuit against the Trump admin over a new rule that would deny green cards to foreigners deemed likely to rely on public welfare. The suit targets what is described as allowing migrants to leech off public welfare dollars like SNAP, calling it grossly illegal and destined to cause irreparable damage. Mamdani stated that New York City is leading a coalition of cities and counties to sue the federal government, including Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Santa Clara County, and King County. He emphasized that immigrants are New Yorkers and declared, To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us. We are confronting this injustice with the solidarity and action that it demands, he said. The lawsuit is being filed alongside a separate legal challenge led by Attorney General Jaynes, for whose partnership he expressed gratitude. While the author asserts the Trump administration has full authority to enact the rule, the coalition insists on fighting the policy regardless.
