The deception surrounding The Blair Witch Project (1999) went far deeper than just acting. Production intentionally starved the cast while they were stalked at night in the Maryland woods, all while filming with handheld cameras and GPS devices. Studio executives actively blocked the cast from attending Cannes and prevented them from giving any interviews to keep up the illusion that the actors were missing or dead. This ruse became so convincing that Heather Donahue's mother actually received sympathy cards from people who thought her daughter had died in the forest. As the shoot continued, food rations for the crew were deliberately cut back. Michael C. Williams was completely unaware of an abandoned house until he found it himself in the dark. Every single day, the actors followed daily GPS coordinates to locate hidden film canisters holding secret instructions they were forbidden from sharing with each other. I previously believed this entire film was real when I watched it.
