    Spike Lee 25TH HOUR poster

25TH HOUR dropped in 2002 and stands as the only significant film about 9/11 created before Hollywood even started making similar works. The book this movie is based on was written before the attacks occurred, yet production was already underway when everything happened. Director Spike Lee could have ignored the tragedy but instead chose to restructure the entire film around the reality of New York City after the events. Filming took place right at the World Trade Center excavation site where the absence of the towers becomes a pervasive element throughout the whole movie without ever becoming the central plot point. The result is that no other film has surpassed this work regarding its treatment of the subject because it avoids making the attacks the primary narrative driver. As the argument goes, 25TH HOUR isn't about 9/11. It's about New York trying to exist after 9/11.
