COWBOY BEPOP TANK Yoko Kanno Shinichiro Watanabe

Shinichiro Watanabe treats music and visuals as equal partners in every project he touches, a stance that defines why COWBOY BEPOP still feels brand new after nearly thirty years. Yoko Kanno points directly to the director's passion for sound as the reason the show hasn't aged a day since its release. In a 2025 interview with The Vulture, Watanabe confirmed he identifies as a big music freak who builds a 50/50 partnership between the movie or show and the soundtrack. That dynamic is what makes the music essential to the identity of COWBOY BEPOP alongside its visual aesthetic. You can hear it immediately in TANK by Yoko Kanno, where an explosive jazz opening sets the rhythm, attitude, and energy for the entire series right from the start.
